The fortified city or Ksar of Ait Benhaddou is one of 9 sites in Morocco which UNESCO has declared a World Heritage Site. The Ksar is a living concept tribal, traditional pre-Saharan Morocco, made ??up of a group of buildings built in 1600 with organic materials, including a rich red mud, and enclosed within high walls where some families still live. Ait Benhaddou has been built on a hill, so as to dominate the valley, along the banks of the river Ounila, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, 30 km from Ouarzazate.
