Volubilis


 At the foot of the Atlas mountains, a valley full of olive and almond trees, between Fez and Rabat and near Meknes, lies the archaeological site of Volubilis, UNESCO World Heritage, a Roman city that was the capital of the Mauritania established in the area around the third century BC. the archaeological remains of this site actually witness the different civilizations that have occupied in the course of ten centuries, from prehistoric times to the Islamic period.

Volubilis covers 42 hectares and its ruins bear witness to the magnificence of his time with the remains of beautiful buildings decorated with beautiful mosaics, basilica, the temple of Jupiter and a triumphal arch commemorating the emperor Caracalla, all surrounded by 2 km and 600 meters of walls. This Roman site remained intact until the devastating earthquake that struck the area mid-1700s and only later sacked for the construction of Meknes.

Abandoned during the eleventh century, Voulibilis is a place not to be missed and always insert in your activities in the area of Fes with Moulay Idriss, the holy city that is located a few miles from this center to the edge of the colonial Roman Empire.
